Talents/Abilities: Mystical origin, Occult Lore, Scholar of Antiquities
Equipment:
Oak Staff: Appears as an ordinary, polished, wooden staff with a bent top. She must use the staff as a magical focal point for any spell that she has not mastered above Excellent. When used in such a way, magical runes that are etched up and down the length glow and become visible. If used for defense as a staff, it may produce up to Good damage on a non-armored person. The item is a family heirloom. When it was first created, the staff was imbued with magical protection to give it a break resistance of Unearthly.
Resource Books: Within her vast collection of books are ancient tomes she has collected during her years with her previous employer/mentor or during her past travels. Subjects vary from ancient texts to spells and ritual tomes. She is always looking to expand her collection in any means she deems acceptable; loss of life by others not necessarily a deterrent.
Familiar/companion/pet: When on familiar territory, an adult sized grey cat can usually be found lurking nearby. The cat prefers to be called Seun. She has been a companion since Astrea was a child of 13. There is much about Seun that is unknown even to Astrea. Seun is the exception to Astrea’s Empathy and Telepathy. They are connected so long as Seun and Astrea are within 200 miles of each other. Should Seun leave this Dimention or Earth, Astrea will feel the loss immediately, no matter the distance. Seun has a knack for spying, when the mood strikes the cat, and only the cat.
Clothing: Astrea prefers long flowing dresses over dress pants, but will wear them when necessary; however, she will not wear synthetic clothing if there is any way to avoid it. Her preferences are cotton, linen, and when a special occasion, silk. Her clothing is not magical in nature, but she has been guilty of performing illusions which makes the gown appear to sparkle/glow. She restricts this activity for when she’s in the company of other witches.
Weaknesses:
Information/Knowledge: She has an overwhelming need to learn. The unknown is a strong draw for her. Usually she’s not hindered by how this knowledge is obtained. Offering to give her something to increase her knowledge on a subject she is interested will, more times than not, get her assistance so long as the task has minimal risk to her.
Loss of Self: She has always had an unnatural fear of losing her “mind” as she calls it; to suddenly find herself unable to remember all that she has learned over the years and be reduced to a child in thoughts. It is mostly linked to control. The more she knows, the more control over herself and her environment she feels. Astrea rarely likes to loose control.
Love: While she will deny a desire for it, Astrea secretly longs for what her parents have, she just doesn’t believe she will ever find someone who would embrace her love of magical lore as much as she does, nor respect the fact she must strive to expand her knowledge constantly. The other obstacle is trust. Astrea’s trust isn’t easily won. At the present she only trusts family and her mentor. Everyone else, she just assumes they are after something and treats them accordingly.
History:
Astrea was born the middle child to a family of wealthy witches in New Salem, Colorado. She had two siblings, but her brother was sent away when she was 7. She was told he was sent away for his own good. The family never spoke of him for several years until one day she was told he was believed dead. To some degree, she’s lived a sheltered life. She didn’t live on the streets, nor did she have abusive parents. For most of her youth, the first forty years, she lived as most in her secluded community lived. She had the standard education that all the others in the “witch” community had before she did what any grown-up did. She got a job. And oh what a job it was!
Helgman Triance, the local bookstore owner offered her a position in his store as an assistant. It was considered by her family to be an honored position since he rarely took knew assistances; usually only when one managed to get him/her killed. You see, it wasn’t a normal bookstore. The Arcane Tablet specialized in mystical tombs, scrolls, and artifacts from various sources. The assistant’s job normally consisted of obtaining, cataloging, and, when needed, testing of the new items/tomes Helgman had brought in. This could, at times, work out in the assistant’s favor…sometimes not. Astrea was luckier that most. She lasted well beyond the average 45 years, she lasted 60 before she decided she had learned all that she could from her mentor. The knowledge that she had gained over that time was vast, but she wanted, needed more.
For ten years, she went on a ‘walk-a-bout” of sorts. She roamed the earth in an attempt to further expand her knowledge. There were gaps in her vast understanding and she had a need to fill those gaps. During this time, her practical knowledge and use of what she learned increased steadily until what it is today.
During the first year of her wanderings, she found herself in a sticky situation with another mage. The situation was resolved by a third mage, whom she discovered was her brother, thought to be lost in the Altantean sea since they hadn’t heard from either him or his mentor since the day he left. They traveled together for a few weeks, then separated, keeping in contact every few months or so.
On her 120th birthday, Astrea started growing weary of the constant travel. While she knew some travel was necessary in order to obtain items she’ll need to expand her magical knowledge, she decided she should make a home base for herself. Someplace she can store all her treasured books and relics. When the idea first came to her, she wrote to her brother about it. She told him she had decided to settle down in New York City and extended an offer to join her if he so desired. It has taken her a year of planning, but the fruit of her labors has finally paid off and she should be opening the doors to her very own antique/used book store soon.
